Untamed
Photographer Ryan McGinley and creative director Jefferson Hack created the key visual for the Mercedes-Benz fashion engagement Autumn/Winter 2013
When a boy from New Jersey, a pretty ballerina, a legendary publicist, a white horse and an elegant car meet in a vast Californian landscape things out of the ordinary happen. Especially so when it is the photographer Ryan McGinley, top model Karlie Kloss, British creative director Jefferson Hack and the Mercedes-Benz CLA.

It is a free spirited team: American photographer Ryan McGinley is the youngest photographer to have had a solo show at the Whitney Museum of Contemporary Art. His photorealistic style and lyrical approach to the subject of nature are trend-setting. Creative Director Jefferson Hack lives in London and is the co-founder of Dazed & Confused Magazine as well as AnOther Magazine and AnOther Man. He has spent his working life showcasing and inspiring the zeitgeist. Top model Karlie Kloss is the embodiment of this very zeitgeist: she is not only extraordinarily beautiful but a character herself. With her grace and flexibility, earned through a solid education in classical ballet, she is remarkable even amongst all the top models of the moment. She can stand her ground next to a car like the Mercedes-Benz CLA. With its concave and convex surfaces and avant-garde design this four-door vehicle is more than a car – it is a fashion-statement.
A look at the making of next season’s key visual conveys an idea of the team’s accomplishment: an orchestration of man, nature and technology as partners rather than antagonists. Karlie Kloss, in a fluid Chloé outfit, is delicate and strong at the same time. Her movements mirror that of the elegant white horse while at the same time mirroring the strength and versatility of the CLA. The Californian landscape with its vastness and canyons, its dramatic skies and it sparse flora is the epitome of untamed nature. This energy can also be found in the strength of the horse, the expressive design of the CLA and in the fearless spirit of Karlie Kloss.
For one moment in time, photographer Ryan McGinley and creative director Jefferson Hack manage to dissolve the borders between man and machine, nature and technology. That is extraordinary.
